Title: The effects of preceding prospective collaborative studies (IDEAL stage 2b) on the quality and impact of subsequent randomized controlled trials (IDEAL stage 3) evaluating surgical innovations. A case-control systematic review of the literature.

Summary: RCTs in surgery often face methodological challenges resulting in low quality, and sometimes failure. The IDEAL framework proposed in stage 2b that carefully planned prospective and collaborative cohort studies before the development of RCTs could help counter some of the challenges with resulting improvement in quality and increased chances of success of RCTs evaluating surgical innovations. This study will determine whether this proposition is reflected in the current literature using a case-control design for a systematic review of the literature.
